I’m a current Royal Mail postman. I work on deliveries, but before that I used to work in the Royal Mail department that is specifically for processing International Mail. I never worked in Dover, but I have a good idea about what happened from my work up here. Rosemary P is half correct. The domestic UK mail network is centralised. All mail for a given postcode area (both mail addressed to the area and mail collected in the area) is handled at what is known as a Mail Centre. Dover’s local mail – and in fact all of the mail for the CT postcode area (CT for Canterbury) – is handled at Canterbury Mail Centre, before it is dispatched to the local Delivery Offices. This will be the office thats still open, where you collect your parcels from. Mail will be arriving here between 5.30 and 6.30, and its prepared for delivery there by the local postmen.
