They couldn’t keep up with traffic. You had a choice of riding in the middle of the lane and irritating drivers, or hugging the edge and getting bumped by irritated drivers. They had pitiful acceleration so riders tended to not stop at stop signs and lights. MoPeds fell out of favor as the body count rose. I would severly beat about the head and shoulders any relative or friend who was considering a MoPed. With speed of traffic today I would not allow a releative or friend to get anything less than a 125cc bike. Feel free to get one for yourself.
