Despite a popular rumor that he died from eating Pop Rocks and soda at the same time, John Gilchrist, the actor that portrayed “Mikey”, is alive and well. He works as an advertising account manager for a radio station in New York. The Life commercial with “Mikey” first appeared in 1972 and was shown on television for twelve years. The rumor about his death has become one of the most persistent “urban legends” in our times. The story alleges that Gilchrist ate several packages of Pop Rocks and drank several cans of soda. Pop Rocks are fruit flavored candies that crackle when placed in the mouth. They release small amounts of carbon dioxide. The rumor claims that combined with the carbonation from soda caused Gilchrist’s stomach to rupture or explode.
