He is running as an independent. Kevorkian was released on parole from a Michigan prison in 2007. He served eight years of a 10- to 25-year sentence for second-degree murder. He was convicted in the death by injection of a terminally ill patient. Kevorkian, an advocate for assisted suicide, says that he has helped more than 130 people take their own lives. Michigan granted Kevorkian an early parole because of good behavior and a promise not to help any more people commit suicide.
