What happened to Ben and skin at 105.3 the fan and why?
As Barry Horn mentioned about an hour ago, as of this afternoon Ben and Skin are no longer your drive-time hosts at 105.3 The Fan. After almost a year of station name changes and philosophical tweaks, in the end their unconventional show – heavy on basketball and hip-hop and unique guests – didn’t mesh with the direction of The Fan. From everything I hear, the parting was mutual. From Ben and Skin’s Facebook: Guys, guys, guys. We are no longer at 105.3 The Fan. We’ve parted ways on the best possible terms with nothing but love for all of our friends there. We’re truly grateful that we were given the opportunity to connect with what has been an extremely attractive audience. More attractive than we could have ever imagined. In fact, you’re so attractive it hurts. Especially you. No, not you. You. Love, Ben & Skin. Ben and Skin have built a reputation as two guys who occasionally appear on the radio. Their unique brand of crime-infused “dramedy” thrives due to the rapport they’ve developed during the past quarter century of friendship. Not to mention their willingness to rock a fake mustache for no apparent reason. And they love charity. The Ben and Skin “brand,” as those of us in the bio-writing business like to call it, has also scored the occasional TV special on KTXA 21 over the years (to that end they’d like to thank Steve Mauldin and Gary Schneider for being awesome). But most of the blame for Ben and Skin’s curious presence in the murky shadows of the local media scene can be placed at the feet of the great Rick Mills, who gave these clowns their start at KSTR 49 back in the day because they were inexpensive, reasonably priced and free. Their willingness to cha-cha with the good kids over at Belo has birthed a Wednesday humor column in Quick called Hot Potato Salad that defies humor. (D Ma

While Ben and Skin dabble with a screenplay, work on the re-launch of www.benandskin.com and publicly ponder their futures via Facebook and Twitter, The Fan’s new 2-6 p.m. offering features Dan O’Malley and Sean Salisbury. Newy Scruggs will continue to anchor the 10 a.m.-2 p.m. shift with Newy & Friends, a show featuring a smorgasbord of Metroplex sportswriters including, in part, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Mac Engel, the Dallas Morning News’ Richard Durrett and a certain dork who pens a daily Dallas Observer sports blog called – whatd’ya know? – The S
