The Revolutionary War was a war between 13 colonies that technically belonged to England. When England began taxing them outrageously and refused to give them representation in Parliment, the colonies decided to separate and become their own nation. Beginning in 1775 and lasting until the British surrendered in 1781, Americans finally won their freedom.
