What happened during The 40 Hour Drought?
The 40 Hour Drought was a success with over 2000 Australians registering to take part in the challenge of limiting their water use. Schools, families and individuals eagerly participated in the event and tracked their progress with a water usage chart. Taking shorter showers and re-using water for household tasks were the main ways participants survived with just 40 litres of water. An ABC Local Radio survey showed that many people were shocked by the amount of water they used in a day. ABC Local Radio interviewed Ross Young, the Executive Director of the Water Services Association of Australia, who estimated participants had saved at least 630,000 litres of water in the 40 hours.
