If you’ve walked, in the last six months or so, down one of the residential blocks around downtown Culver City, you’ve seen the yard signs. They’re eye-catching signs because they’re not Obama signs, or “No on 8” signs. Instead, they’re ubiquitous “SCALE BACK 4043 Irving Place” signs. In a nutshell, the city sold a big lot across the street from the Elementary school on Irving to a developer. The developer planned to build a ginormously tall mixed-use building with dozens of luxury condo and office space units. The town, and the historic (as noted by the city) homes surrounding the development freaked the hell out due to concerns that a) the building does not meet city code for developments, b) the plans were hideous, c) the construction with churn up lead and other toxins which are bad for the nearby school children, and environment, d) the plans would put at least 70 more cars on those tiny streets and create a traffic nightmare, and e) (sotto voce) their property values would decrea
