What happened at the Council of Trent?
Today there are literally countless versions of Christianity. You might have some friends that are Lutheran, or Mormon, or Baptist, or Fundamentalist, to name a few of the more common ones. But for 1500 years, there existed only one universal Catholic Church without major dissent or rebellion. When groups of people first began to revolt against the Church in the early 16th century (a.k.a. the Protestant Reformation), the bishops of the Church decided to get together for a series of meetings to make it clear to everyone what exactly Catholics believe. Those meetings were collectively known as the Council of Trent, lasting from 1545 to 1564. Among many important points, the Council of Trent established that the faith and practice of the Church was based on Scripture AND Tradition, in direct opposition to the fledging Protestants who felt that the Scriptures alone were good enough to live by, and that the guiding, teaching authority of the Church was unnecessary.
