What Happened at Codex Committee on Nutrition Today?
CCNFSDU (Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses) concluded its deliberations today with an overtime session that ran for several hours extra. Delegates dutifully sat through hours and hours and hours of simultaneous translation of procedural minutia masking potentially cataclysmic impact of decisions taken or shot down by the heavy-handed dictates of the Chair. For example, when global nutrition was (briefly) under discussion and an NGO’s Delegate correctly made reference to the global soil depletion meaning that nutrient values of foods grown in them are seriously deficient, Dr. Grossklaus refused to even allow that comment into the report of the meeting which will be approved on Saturday at the final session of this year’s CCNFSDU meeting. Nothing new there! What is new today is that we made contact with several new partners in global health, countries which want our presence on the ground in their countries to help their decision makers to counteract the pot
