What guitar chords should I learn first?

Learn E first – it uses all six strings, and is the basis for what is called a ‘barre chord’ that you can play anywhere on the neck. Then learn A D is probably next. Then G. Then C. Maybe F next. Figure out B somewhere along the way, then a few of the sharps and flats. Once you’ve got those down – then play an E chord, only don’t use your index finger. Slide it up a fret, and then put your index finger all the way across – this is the ‘barre chord’ I was talking about. You can do the same thing on the A string (second from biggest) by playing an A chord, and then as you slide up, just put your index finger down. This allows you to play a chord anywhere on the neck. Also, somewhere in there – learn some minor chords, they add a certain melancholy flavor to music – E minor, A minor (these can also be done as minor barre chords) D minor, etc. etc. Pick a few songs you want to learn, and then figure out the chords for them. That’s usually the easiest way to get going.
