What Greek God Was The God Of The Sea And Earthquakes?
The Greek god of the sea and earthquakes was POSEIDON. He was one of the sons of Cronos and Rhea. After Cronos was overthrown, his three sons, Zeus, Poseidon and Hades took control of the sky, sea and underworld respectively (the earth was shared among them.) Zeus was officially the senior, but Poseidon often rebelled against him; earthquakes were believed to be sign of his anger. He is usually pictured riding through the sea in a chariot pulled by golden seahorses, and carrying a trident; a three-pronged sceptre with with he could stir up the waves to fury. Poseidon is especially associated with the island of Crete; he is said to have punished the Minoans, the ancient people of Crete, for showing him disrespect by causing the wife of King Minos to fall in love with a bull. As a result she gave birth to the Minotoar, a half-human monster that was eventually destroyed by King Theseus (an Athenian hero also associated wti the cult of Poseidon.) After Theseus’ victory and escape from Knos
