In RGEG terms, “credit” must be related to the levels defined under each factor (i.e., Levels A-F), with corresponding point values assigned. Responsibility and “credit” for a given assignment are determined under Factor 1. ARS has never equated either RL or LS responsibility to any given level. LS (like RL and AD) is an ARS research program leadership designation created in P&P 100.2-ARS, and does not relate directly to RGEG criteria. More significantly, the RGEG doesn’t evaluate differing formal leadership levels at all. Instead, it focuses on the relative scope and complexity of the research program for which a scientist is responsible. Coupled to this is the underlying position classification principle that prohibits “grading by alignment.” It is not appropriate to make artificial, rigid comparisons such as “all RL’s will be scored at least Level C and all LS’s will be at least Level B for Factor 1.” Every position must be individually evaluated against RGEG level criteria.
