What good are Richardsons ground squirrels?
Unlike humans, Richardson’s ground squirrels do not commit atrocities such as war, torture, genocide, rape, and terrorism. They attempt to live peacefully in the habitat in which they evolved and in which they lived in harmony with indigenous peoples. Richardson’s ground squirrels are integral members of the prairie ecosystem. Their burrows create protected habitat for other prairie species such as burrowing owls, salamanders, and bumblebees, and they are a food source for hawks, badgers, and many other carnivores. If Richardson’s ground squirrels were exterminated, other species native to the prairie habitat would be affected. For further information, see Habitat & Home Range.
