There were originally two sepearate arches which were roughly parabola shaped. In 1962 Jim Schindler designed the current logo. In those days, draftsmen used “draftsmen’s splines” to create curved shapes, so likely the edges were spline shaped. A draftsmen’s spline is a thin flexible piece of wood which you can hold in place to any desired shape with metal weights – the spline would form a smooth curve between the weights. Modern design uses bezier spline curves which are parametric. They don’t have a simple algebraic representation.
