What gear should I bring on a hillwalk?
The following is a list of essential gear: Good walking boots Waterproof jacket and trousers (no denim jeans; very uncomfortable in wet conditions) Rucksack Enough food and drink for the day (we always have lunch in the hills) Gloves and Hat These further items are recommended: Bivi bag (survival bag) Gaiters Small torch (for emergencies) Extra clothing layers Walking stick Walk Leaders should always be equipped with: Map, compass, whistle and torch Personal First Aid Kit Weather: You should be aware of the rapidly changeable weather conditions in the Kerry mountains. Remember, the higher you go in the hills, the lower the temperature: a one degree Celsius drop for each 100 meters of ascent. The wind is stronger up there, and there is more rainfall and a far greater risk of mist, cloud and fog. Weather conditions can change in minutes and you need to have adequate gear to cope with this.
