National Grid provides two types of meter boxes: the surface mounted meter box and the semi-concealed meter box. These boxes will be supplied and fitted when requested. However, if you have a built-in (also known as a cavity or recessed box) you will need to instruct a builder to fit the box before the National Grid work is due to be started. To identify the various types of meter box housing available please view the Domestic Service Alteration- Web Application user guide. If you would like to have a semi-concealed meter box then you will need to take the following information into consideration. Where the existing supply is not a semi-concealed meter you will require a meter exchange as the semi-concealed meter is slightly smaller. Contact your current gas supplier in advance and advise them of the date the National Grid work is due to be started on, as failure to arrange an exchange will leave you without gas.
