The Higher Education Act 2004 enables universities to charge variable fees, to a maximum of 3000 per year. If a teacher trainee is not able to pay the fee themselves, or if they are not supported by their employer, a loan is available to pay these tuition fees. The loan is made by the Student Loans Company and is paid directly to the course provider. The trainee becomes liable for repayments once their annual income exceeds 15,000 and the monthly repayments are linked to income, not to the amount outstanding. Training bursaries are available for trainees training to teach designated shortage subjects. For those intending to teach mathematics, science or construction, the training bursary is worth 9,000. For those training to teach other shortage subjects, the training bursary is 6,000.
