What frustrated wannabe co-host nation led the small boycott of the 1988 Summer Olympics?
North Korea wanted to co-host the Games and were offered the gymnastics and cycling events, which they declined to hold. So they headed the boycott in the hopes of getting other Communist nations to join them. However, since those nations had boycotted the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, they were not going to miss a second Olympics for Kim Il Sung. Once Russia committed to the Games China followed and the boycott fell apart. Cuba, Nicaragua, and Ethiopia were the only countries to join North Korea and boycott the 1988 Games.
