What fruits are grown in desert soil?
History tells us what grows in desert soils, and most of these fruits originated in northern Africa, the Middle East and Persia. The Bible lists many of them as its content was written by a desert people. Pomegranate – This deciduous tree is a beautiful bloomer and makes an exceptional small fruiting accent for gardens. Fig – Figs first came to our gardens from Spain to Mexico and then into California where the most common varieties, such as ‘Mission’ were developed. Deciduous tree. Grape – Table grapes do well in the desert heat and it is said that the better vintages of wine grapes come from sparse soils. This is also the primary shade maker for rancho and mission in California. Deciduous vine. Date Palm – Female date palms produce a good crop of dates if there is a male tree in the area to provide pollination. Evergreen tree, frost tender.
