What forms when you mic hydrochloric acid with zinc?

0

CAUTION AHEAD: When you mix hydrochloric acid with zinc, you form a solution with zn++ and cl- ions, and hydrogen gas is emitted. Chlorine gas is heavy and might put a fire out my preventing it from getting oxygen. If you have zinc and HCl in a test tube and put a burning splint in the mouth of the tube, you will often get a pop as the hydrogen burns. If you produce hydrogen by putting zinc and HCl in a flask and having a tube through which the hydrogen escapes, one of two things will happen: the hydrogen will burn with something called a singing flame, that resonates loudly if an open-ended glass tube is placed over the flame OR — if there is any oxygen left in the flask, the flask and its contents will simply disappear in a nasty explosion. DO NOT play with hydrogen.
