What forms of government might evolve from democracy in the future?
This is one question to which I wish I knew the answer. Democracy is bound up with beaurocracy and as such appears to be very slow in bringing about change. With the pace of change within society, that wouldn’t appear to be the best of situations. Individuals within society seek to have more influence over their representatives, yet those representatives are more influenced by the party they represent and so give the impression of being aloof and remote from the electorate. Then you have the problem that there is a viscous circle of promise, failure and blame. Governments need to be elected and so the politicians make campaign pledges based on the government doing the electorate favours. When things go wrong (even things beyond the governments control) the politicians end up being blamed. In order to avoid the blame, we find that bigger, more beaurocratic institutions being set up centrally to try and eliminate risk. The greater the attempt of risk elimination – the more expensive and
