What formal role would the Mayor play under the proposal?
The Mayor of the City of Detroit will be empowered under state law. He will appoint and provide oversight to the Superintendent of the Detroit Public Schools. The superintendent would set curriculum standards and goals for the schools, and set a budget which would be approved by the Mayor. The Mayor would report annually to citizens on the progress of the schools. With the Mayor in charge, we’ll see safer schools, needed books and supplies, and quality teachers in the classroom. He’s committed to the vision of Excellent Schools Detroit and transforming education for our kids. What will happen to the School Board? The board would be replaced by an advisory board of parents, teachers, principals and community representatives. They would advise the Mayor on his oversight of the schools.
