Communism was the form of government in charge in 1959. Communism is a form of socialism advocated by Karl Marx; according to Marx, class struggle was inevitable and would lead to the creation of a classless society in which all wealth and property would be owned by the community as a whole. The leader of Cuba after 1959 was a man named Fidel Castro. He was a lawyer in 1950, in 1950 he rallied for people to oppose the Batista regime. In 1959 he led his guerilla army to victory but the joy wore off as Castro introduced radical reforms that turned Cuba into a communist state. He nationalized foreign owned sugar plantations and businesses. As a sign of patriotism he hasn’t shaved his beard or moustache and wears the same army uniform from forty years ago.
