What foreign countries helped the patriots win the American Revolution, how did each country help, and why?
France, Holland and Spain. France was the primary ally, and the helped by laoning huge sums of money, and selling the Patriot cause cannons, muskets, powder, shot and a variety of other goods. After the Treaty of Anmity and Commerce, in 1778, they also became directly involved, sending a fleet and numerous ground forces to fight alongside the Patriots. Both Spain and Holland also provided money in the form of loans through the French front-company “Hortelese and Company.” Moreover, the Dutch also sold the Patriots ships and often helped smuggle goods into the Colonies. After the Treaty mentioned above was signed, Spain came in to what was now a growing and open conflict between France and Britain, and while Spain did not directly aid the Patriots, they did attack British interests and threaten Britain itself, which forced the British to disperse their forces much more widely and limit the number of forces, both military and naval, which could be deployed to North America.
