What foods should be avoided with a stomache ulcer?
stomach ulcers have been linked with bacterium, heliobactor – has she been tested and treated for this? The ulcer is a weak spot on the stomach wall which allows hydrochloric acid of pH 1-2 access to the tissue and hence the pain. Foods that increase the acidity of the stomach should be avoided. Fatty or oily foods need a lot more HCl for the stomach to begin breaking them down into smaller molecules. Spices irritate the nerves in a similar way to heat, and thus will irritate the wound of an ulcer. Antacids that counter act or neutralise acid are good in short term but stomach detects increased pH (raising pH is reducing the acidity – the lower the pH the more acidic the solution is) and produces more acid to compensate. Complex carbohydrates, eg veg, pasta etc, with low fat/protein accompaniements will lessen discomfort but not remove it. See a specialist.
