Edit: Can’t find my book. Anyway, during the third or fourth dynasty of Egyptian rule there was a plague that broke out that infected both humans and livestock. It caused festering blisters (may have been bubonic plague, may have been smallpox…) and the Egyptians feared the disease was being transmitted by pigs. They therefore banned pigs/pigmeats until order was restored. This, in time, became known as the sixth of the ten plagues that God and Moses were said to inflict upon the Eyptians to force them to allow the Isrealites to leave.
