What food producing animals will be at Glenlea Research Station when the National centre is established?
• 260 sows, farrow-finish; • 60 dairy cows and replacements; • 80 feeder cattle – 4 mo/yr; • Poultry, including 4400 layers and 3300 broilers that will be housed at the University of Manitoba Fort Garry campus. These numbers equate to 545.6 Animal Units. One animal unit being the number of animals of a particular category of livestock to excrete a total of 73 kg nitrogen in a 12 month period. (1 dairy cow & replacements = 2 AU, 1 beef cow & replacements = 1.2 AU, 1 sow farrow-to finish = 1.25). 7. Who will use the new facilities? The National Centre for Livestock and the Environment will bring together researchers from nine different University departments as well as from federal research labs in Manitoba and other parts of Canada.
