Amending your soil is the best way to go. Adding compost, and maybe sand to loosen the ground and other amending ingredients will make the soil amenable to just about any flower that you like because it aerates and allows roots to grow for strong plants. Go to your local nursery and see what plants you like, then ask if they grow well in your type of soil. They live there so they should know what grows best. Another source is a home extension group in your area. My Mom grew huge dahlias but our soil was great–my Dad used a lot of manure and compost material first and really worked it into the soil.
