What fish are present in the seagrasses of SAB?
St. Andrew Bay is a beautiful estuary for hundreds of different types of sea life. The seagrass meadows of this beautiful underwater community provide a protective habitat for organisms from small epiphytes to snails to shrimp to hundreds of various types of fish. Not all fish stay year round, like our tourists, fish can be classified as permanent, seasonal, transient residents, and a small group of casual visitors. According to a bulletin of the American Littoral Society, All of the organisms, plant and animals, are part of a complex community which owes its existence to the structure provided by the seagrass. The animals are all tied, in some way, to the detrital food web which begins when the seagrasses die and decompose. The seagrasses not only provide habitat, but they also provide shelter for young animals, food for some animals that graze on them directly, and food for many others indirectly as they feed on the animals who graze or utilize the seagrass after it decomposes.
