What filter has to have activated carbon in the filters?

No filter “has” to have activated carbon in it. I don’t use it, and only have a handful of times to remove medications from the water, which is all it’s really needed for. You can put just about anything in the filters, as long as there’s room. Some stuff I’ve used before or currently, crushed coral or peat moss in a mesh filter media bag, filter floss, sponges(not the dish kind), bio balls, ceramic rings, etc. Go down the aisle of filter stuff at a pet store….there lots of stuff you can add. But you don’t need all that stuff. Do some research for the types of fish you have, then figure out what you need. Usually, just some filter floss or a filter pad is enough, but I like to keep some bio balls or ceramic rings for beneficial bacteria, in a few of my filters in case I need to start up a new tank or re-cycle one. And if you don’t want the carbon that comes attached to the filter pads, you can usually just cut a slit in the pad and dump the carbon out. What I do, and it’s much cheape
