To call a film the Citizen Kane of its genre has become the ultimate (and ultimately absurd) superlative. Self-financed to the tune of $6m by its director/writer/producer/star Tommy Wiseau, it’s so bad, it’s brilliant. Telling the tale of a melodramatic love triangle in San Francisco, the acting is woeful, the plot makes no sense, one actor quit and his dialogue was simply given to another character. Wiseau ended up sacking his entire crew twice during filming and made only $2,000 during its initial run. But it has gone on to develop a cult following in LA due to so-bad-its-good chic, with “interactive” midnight screenings popping up all over America. That trend now looks set to continue here.
