What federal loan forgiveness programs are available?
Under loan forgiveness, a student is eligible to have a portion of his/her loan forgiven when the student meets certain requirements — e.g., teaching in a school with a high low-income population for a specified number of years, working in a public service job (Perkins only), serving in the military (Perkins only), etc. Loan cancellation/discharge is available to borrowers under certain specific circumstances such as death, total and permanent disability, school closure, etc.
