What famous artist painted naval battles?
Russian war artist Vasily Vereshchagin had been commissioned by the Tzar to paint battle scenes during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). While a guest of Admiral Stepan Makarov, aboard his flagship, the battleship “Petropavlovsk” in April 1904, the Russian warship struck a mine while entering the Yellow Sea. More than half of the battleship’s crew perished during her sinking, including both Admiral Makarov and the noted war artist Vereshchagin.
