What Family Of Animals Does The Mole Belong To?
Moles are members of the Talpidae family. They are mammals belonging to the Insectivora order. They live underground and burrow extensive tunnel systems. Their bodies are cylindrical in shape and invariably covered in a smooth coat of fur.They have very small eyes (bad eyesight) and ears that are not really visible. They have strong muscular forefeet that are perfect tools for burrowing. Some species of moles are aquatic or semi-aquatic. The Talpidae family consists of 42 species that are put into 17 genera. The Talpidae family is further divided into three subfamilies which are Desmaninae (desmans), Talpinae (moles) and Uropsilinae (shrew moles). Moles have pretty high metabolic rates and so it follows that they would also have insatiable appetites.They are very active creatures and though they can be found in many habitats , they generally prefer moist soil that has plents of grubs and worms as well as it is easy to burrow in.
