What facts are there about Lake Volta in Ghana?
Lake Volta – is the largest reservoir by surface area in the world – the fourth largest reservoir by water volume in the world – is located completely within the country of Ghana – has a surface area of about 8,502 km² (3,275 square miles) – lies along the Greenwich Meridian – is six degrees of latitude north of the Equator. – north most point is close to the town of Yapei – south most extreme is at the Akosombo Dam, 520 kilometres downstream from Yapei. – the White Volta River and the Black Volta River formerly converged where the middle of the reservoir now lies, to form the single Volta River. – The Volta River flows from the outlets of the Akosombo dam to the Atlantic Ocean in south most Ghana. – is formed by the Akosombo Dam, which began in 1961 and completed in 1965. Because of the formation of Lake Volta, about 78,000 people were relocated to new towns and villages, along with 200,000 animals belonging to them. About 120 buildings were destroyed, not including small residences.
