“Societal reasons like lack of good governance, long–standing debt, poor agricultural practices, gender equity and natural disasters all come into play. Lack of education is another prevalent factor – not having a proper education and, therefore, the skills necessary to provide for a family. Lack of clean water, extreme hunger and rampant disease are also key factors that perpetuate poverty. For example, people with malaria, TB and HIV can’t maintain steady work.” You’ve seen extreme poverty up close. Have you also seen compassion in action? “It’s important when you’re doing the kind of work that I’m involved in to find ways to practice compassion in your everyday life. It’s often easy to extend empathy to people across the ocean and see it as somehow separate.
