• The teaching profession suffers from a poor public image. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the profession is perceived as burnt-out, struggling to cope with student welfare and discipline issues, and under-remunerated. Working conditions are not seen as attractive when compared to those in related professions. Graduates in science, mathematics and related disciplines have other employment options and are choosing these in preference to teaching. AAS will be interested in the results of further research to be undertaken in this area by MCEETYA, but is of the view that a substantial increase in resources is necessary to address the underlying issues.
