Bob W Whitbeck Answer: Fish “breathe” with gills and absorb oxygen from the water into the blood stream through capillaries that make the gills appear red. Any water condition that could reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen will effect the fish. I remember reading that one consequence of acid rain in the northeast was to leach aluminum from rocks. The levels of aluminum in some streams caused necrosis of trout gills.
