What factors are considered by the Admissions Committee?
The Admissions Committee will consider: • Undergraduate GPA’s • MCAT scores • Applicant’s personal statement • Applicant’s extracurricular and service activities • Applicant’s commitment to a career in medicine, with emphasis upon the needs of the underserved • Applicant’s work experience (if any) • Letters of recommendation • Interview (selected candidates will receive interviews) The strong candidate shows a commitment to a career in medicine that has been demonstrated with medical volunteerism, clinical experience, or research. A solid record of community service is highly desired. It is important that applicants have made a difference to those around them. Examples of community service pursuits include volunteer work, leadership in campus organizations, mentor service for a peer or youth group, and commitment to and participation in religious or service organizations. Potential transfer students should begin such service as early in their college careers as possible.
No one factor guarantees admission. However, the applicant’s potential for success in the Commerce program is evaluated. Some of the more important factors include overall GPA, academic performance in courses related to business (accounting, economics, mathematics), degree of difficulty of courses, and course load taken. In addition, attention is paid to an applicant’s leadership ability, as demonstrated through co-curricular activities and work experience.
