Slavery DID develop in the northern colonies. As a matter of fact, see the link below–an enormous number of African slaves were brought in through Rhode Island. The north had more industry and smaller farms as opposed to the plantation system of the south and the southern crops of rice and cotton required far more labor than the northern crops so the economy wasn’t as dependent on slavery.
