PanLex includes expressions found in its sources and expressions contributed by users. The sources are mainly bilingual and multilingual dictionaries, so many of the expressions are single words and short phrases typical of those found in such dictionaries. The sources of PanLex usually contain lexemic expressions. These are expressions of the kind that people need to learn as units (together with any irregular grammatical variations) when they learn a language. They are mostly single words, and less often phrases. Lexeme-oriented sources include dictionaries and glossaries. There lexemic expressions are usually found only in their lemmatic (also called citation or dictionary) forms. In English, “sing” and “song” are lexemic expressions (in lemmatic form), but “sings”, “sang”, “sung”, “singing”, and “songs” are not.
