What explanation do theists for the numerous Religions and Gods found around the world?

I think religions are all failed attempts, trying to find the truth and coming up with wrong answers. Unfortunately they’ve got hung up on this idea of a Supreme Being, which is actually not necessary to explain the universe. For example, it could have come into existence spontaneously, or have been created mechanically, or time could be circularly linked so the concept of a beginning and an end are inappropriate. The only religion I know of that doesn’t rely on a creator god or gods is Buddhism, and that’s more like a philosophy than a religion. A lot of its doctrines tie in very well with the ideas of modern physics, which is interesting.
