What examples of apocalyptic fiction served as an inspiration for the book?
I don’t think anything served as direct inspiration for this one–I was very intent on making this my own story. That said, I do love end of the world stories, and I’m sure old favorites of mine like I Am Legend and The Stand helped shape what I was trying to do. More recently, I also loved McCarthy’s The Road. What a bleak, savage masterpiece. In addition to your work with Leisure, you’ve published quite a bit within the small press community. How important has this been to the success of your career? How is it different working with the small presses versus working with a larger publishing house like Leisure? I think my career was sort of the opposite of many writers working today, in that my experience with the small press was fairly limited when I started publishing novels.
