What exactly is the LBJ Fire Academy?
In early 2006 the Austin Fire Department teamed up with the Austin Independent School District to design, implement and manage a fire fighter and EMT-B certification program at LBJ High School. The program consists of two main courses over a two year timeframe. Selected students start the program at the beginning of their junior year. The first three semesters consist of fire fighting instruction. The final semester consists of EMT training. The classes are conducted each school day for two periods (one block). Several Saturday field trips to AFD facilities (ex. Bill Roberts Fire Training Facility) are required during each semester to complete required skills training. The LBJ Fire Academy will be entering its 5th year of operation in August 2010. At this time the LBJ Fire Academy will be conducting both a junior and a senior class. The junior class is held from 0800 to 1000 and the senior class will run from 1400 to 1540.
