Black Friday is the term given to the day after Thanksgiving when most retail stores reopen following the holiday. It is considered the first official day of the Christmas shopping season. The term relates to the idea that most retailers will begin showing a profit, or be in the black, starting with Black Friday. Most major retailers often open much earlier than usual – some as early as midnight, but most around 5 a.m., and offer special prices on select merchandise for a limited number of hours as a lure to get shoppers into the store. The idea is that once shoppers are inside the store for the special pricing, they will buy additional merchandise as well.
