What exactly is an Audiometric Technician?
What I basically do as an audiometric tech is I test people’s hearing. I work at an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctors) clinic where they have an audiology department. On a daily basis I see patients who are there because they have problems with their hearing or balance. I am also a licensed hearing aid specialist so I get to dispense hearing aids to patients as well. What is the hardest part of what you do? The hardest part of what I do, I guess, is telling patients that they have a hearing loss. There are a lot of patients who simply do not realize that their hearing is going down, or have neglected to do anything about it until it is too late. Breaking the news to them can be challenging. It is hard to be clinically detached at those moments, and there is a constant struggle between becoming too involved and trying to maintain an objective view.
