What Exactly Is Acne?

Acne is the result of your pores blocking and allowing bacteria to grow within. Normally our pores produce oil (sebum) for healthy skin. This sebum becomes a growth medium for bacteria within the pore and the resultant block can lead to whiteheads (trapped sebum and bacteria stay below the skin surface), blackheads (trapped sebum and bacteria become partially exposed and turn black due to melanin (skin pigment)), papule (your pore wall breaks and white blood cells rush in to fight), pustules (several days after the pore breaks, pus goes to the surface), nodule (pore break along the bottom and a large inflamed bump results) or cyst (severe inflammatory reaction with very large pus filled lesions).
