I would describe a sustainable surfboard as one that is produced by using renewable energy, local materials, and designing the board in a way that it will return to the place it was born. The Brundtland Commission defines sustainable as “meet[ing] the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” The reality is, there’s no perfect answer to this question. What is sustainable in Southern California is different from what is sustainable in other parts of the country and world.
