An SREC is a clean energy credit issued in the form of a tradable certificate by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU). Every time the solar power system generates 1,000 kWh (or 1 MWh) of power, one SREC is earned, the value of which is applied to the balance of the loan.
